There’s no denying a progressive cultural shift across the U.S. and a very real change in what is acceptable for the mainstream American public discourse.
Like it or not, the legacy of the Kansas City Chiefs is now living on borrowed time and sooner or later the team will have to change names.
For the moment the team has stalled the decision by recruiting a litany of desperate tribes and po’folk willing to take cash in order to offer a tacit endorsement.
To be fair, policy changes at Arrowhead that discouraged fans from wearing mock native American garb represent REAL PROGRESS and most decent people, upon learning that the practice was offensive, complied graciously.
However . . .
Kansas City remains mired in the ridiculous debate over “the chop” wherein the newspaper attempts to garner the moral high ground against thousands of football fans who don’t read.
It’s easy to argue against mob mentality from a safe distance but the fact is that there is no ignoring the the chop or the intolerant legacy of the team’s iconography as long as the team’s moniker persists. Most objective corporate marketing experts would agree that, the old school Chiefs brand is a politically incorrect loser that will continue to depreciate over time.

Known as the Indians since 1915, Cleveland’s Major League Baseball team will next be called the Guardians. The ballclub announced the name change Friday with a video on Twitter narrated by actor Tom Hanks, ending months of internal discussions triggered by a national reckoning by institutions and teams to permanently drop logos and names considered racist.
